No reason entities that manage people’s data should not implement Popia now

Firms can find themselves being ordered by the regulator to pay compensation to affected parties, and they can further be sued for damages

 

While delayed for a few months possibly by the Covid-19 lockdown, President Cyril Ramaphosa finally announced recently that the commencement date of the Protection of Personal Information Act (no 4 of 2013) is July 1 2020.

The statute, commonly known as the Popi Act or Popia, is SA’s first law intended to protect people’s privacy, a human right enshrined in section 14 of our bill of rights, as well as to combat the criminal threats of financial and identity theft..
