EPPF Celebrates 75 Years of Caring Beyond Tomorrow

A Legacy of Trust, a Future of Possibility

EPPF is proud to mark a historic milestone - 75 years of dedicated service to the financial security and well-being of our members and their families.

To commemorate this occasion, we invite you to listen to a special edition of EPPF’s Caring Beyond Tomorrow podcast, where Chief Executive and Principal Officer, Shafeeq Abrahams, is joined by Chairman, Ms Caroline Henry, for a thoughtful reflection on the Fund’s journey, from its pioneering origins to its forward-looking vision.

“What a pleasure it is to speak to our members, their families, and our stakeholders,” said Caroline, opening the discussion with heartfelt pride.

Our Origins: Built on Purpose, Guided by Principle

The story of EPPF began in 1950, following a transformative merger between Eskom and the Victoria Falls Power Company, which grew Eskom’s workforce from 2,700 to 7,850. Just eight years later, in 1958, EPPF became the first pension fund officially registered under the Pension Funds Act.

From the beginning, our purpose was clear: to offer financial support to dependants and ensure that employees could enjoy a secure and dignified retirement. Seventy-five years later, this founding commitment continues to shape our decisions and inspire our progress.

A Legacy of Strength and Impact

Despite global economic challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fund has grown from strength to strength. By 2024, EPPF had achieved R203.5 billion in assets under management, reflecting our strong investment performance and sound governance.

“The true strength of the Fund,” Caroline shared, “lies in the team behind the numbers, individuals committed to securing our members' futures today.”

This strength is best illustrated through the lives we’ve touched. Two of our original pensioners, both now 106 years old, have received benefits for over 41 years. A 97-year-old widow continues to be supported 25 years after her husband's passing. And today, more than 2,700 pensioners have received income from the Fund for over three decades.

What began as a fund for just under 8,000 employees now supports over 80,000 families, all while maintaining one of the strongest funding ratios in South Africa and globally.

“It is a privilege to lead this Fund,” said Shafeeq. “EPPF is not only about numbers, it’s about people, dignity, and long-term security across generations.”

Leadership Rooted in Care

Our guiding principle - Caring Beyond Tomorrow - is more than a motto. It reflects our deep-seated belief in leadership that prioritises people. This ethos shapes our investment approach. EPPF’s sustainable investment strategy goes beyond financial returns, contributing meaningfully to reducing economic inequality, addressing climate change, and creating lasting value for society.

One touching example is that of Ms Nonhlanhla Mondlane, who shared how her late husband’s pension enabled their son to attend university, a true example of EPPF’s multi-generational impact.

“EPPF is more than a retirement provider,” Caroline reflected. “I see the Fund as a foundation for building sustainable communities.”

Looking Ahead: The Next 75 Years

As we look to the future, EPPF is focused on becoming a modern, market-leading retirement partner; one that embraces innovation, enhances digital communication, and adapts alongside Eskom and the changing retirement landscape.

“We’ve come a long way in 75 years,” Caroline noted. “We are excited to see the Fund continue evolving while keeping member satisfaction high and staying true to our values.”

One thing remains certain: our unwavering commitment to caring beyond tomorrow.
